Beth Sondel
Youth Democracy and Civic Engagement Consultant
For the past two decades, Beth Sondel (she/her) has been working towards access, equity, and justice for young people in and outside of schools. She started her career as a public middle school teacher in Louisiana and California. After pursuing her MEd in Education Policy from Harvard Graduate School of Education and her PhD in Curriculum Theory from the University of Wisconsin, she served on faculty at North Carolina State University and the University of Pittsburgh teaching classes and conducting research on education justice. Since she left academia in 2019, Beth has been working directly with young people and communities as an organizer, non-profit leader, and consultant to ensure that teens, and those who know them best, have a voice in determining the policies that affect them.
Beth lives in Pittsburgh with her partner, daughter, and their many pets. Outside of work, she likes to make jewelry, organize a community choir, run, and dance wildly. She is also currently the Board President of Communitopia, a climate justice organization for teens in Western Pennsylvania.
